After following you and FIRE for some time (and with tremendous gratitude for all you/the org is doing) I was so happy to get a notification on my phone a couple of days about this episode. A great conversation - it always feels like a crossover episode when one of my favorites (Lex) hosts my other favourite voices - and I'll stay waiting impatiently for the book. :)
Just finishing your wonderful talk with Lex. I’ve appreciated your work from some time and I look forward to your upcoming book. I was particularly moved by you sharing your struggle with depression and how the culture and depression were linked for you. I’ve felt my trust shaken in the past several years. Internal talk of how I “can’t trust anyone” has made for a dreary existence. Thank you for the work you do and the ways you are seeking to create a curiosity culture. Organizations like FIRE and conversations such as this one give hope that “we” can turn this thing around. 👁️❤️🙏
I sure hope you're right about us figuring this out and launching into a new enlightenment after the inevitable turmoil. I've been getting really depressed about how things are looking. Also, as a person who works in the California community college system, you're so right about the dominance of DEI. I spend a fair chunk of time at work (as a librarian) trying to push back a bit and use the rules for good.
has Substack become just another platform to advertise podcasts and Youtube videos? This stack was recommended by Substack; I thought I might find some real content here, rather than simply another click opportunity...I hope this isn't the beginning of the end for the platform.

Part way through, enjoying so far. Cool beard by the way.
