If "cancel culture" was really about "accountability", then it's another example of authority resisting accountability, because it's not bidirectional. The cancelers aren't subject to--and are quite evasive of--measures to impose accountability on themselves.
All real problems that unfortunately are kind of trivial given the right wing assault on higher education, science and medicine! Trump and his minions want to cancel everything in that domain. How about dedicating your next column and book to how Trump and his right wing donors are actively destroying our precious academies and denying science because to appeal to their ignorant base! You could easily get 5 books out of it without even trying 🤔😂😡🤮
I am literally in court with the Trump administration and Trump himself over his attacks on higher education and freedom of speech. That’s not an excuse to never think about what actually caused the backlash in the first place. Both hard right and hard left can be an often are bad at the same time.
For over a decade FIRE justified focusing exclusively on the left on campus because the left on campus is supposedly hegemonic. Notice that they are not now solely focusing on Trump and his Administration despite the fact that this Administration using state power and violence (Google Alex Pretti and Renee Good for two prime examples) to suppress the speech of the left. If their logic for focusing solely on the left's suppression of right wing speech for over a decade were carried over to the right wing's suppression of left wing speech we'd hear nothing but criticism of Trump. As it stands though Lukianoff is just another in a long line of right wing culture warriors. He's dedicated to this cancel culture grift and no one can persuade FIRE that Trump is the actual existential threat to speech rights they claim leftist undergraduates to be

Blame the IRS and the courts for refusing to allow adjuncts to be paid as contractors -- because that is what we clearly are. It would be better for the universities AND the instructors.
Notice that the lowest comfort level for topics is Israel/Palestine. But right wing culture wars like Lukianoff won't mention the fact that its functionally illegal to criticize Israel in the United States. FIRE from time to time will send a tweet or a small post mentioning the suppression of pro Palestinian speech in a post about speech issues in general. But at the time of the crackdowns on encampments and when students were being arrested, beaten by police, had snipers sent against them and expelled FIRE, through employees like Robert Shibley and Alex Morey, were advocating for more police involvement, more punishment, more suppression. They used the "time place manner" excuse for their support of the crackdown but that didn't hold water then and it doesn't hold water now. They supported the crackdown because FIRE supports the genocide in Gaza. Lukianoff, Shibley and countless others at FIRE do not like Muslim people in general. That's why they'll never actually put their money where their mouth is when it comes to protecting the pro Palestinian speech FIRE hates with a passion
